Why a super statement is worth redacting
Superannuation statements frequently print your tax file number. The OAIC states that if a document you have been asked to supply includes your TFN, “you’re allowed to cross out or remove your TFN before you hand over the document”.
Your superannuation fund IS one of the organisations entitled to hold your TFN. A lender, a landlord or a broker looking at proof of assets is not.
TFN scams routinely target superannuation specifically, with offers to check or consolidate your super in exchange for your TFN and identity documents. A statement containing your TFN, member number and balance in one file is exactly the package those scams are built to collect.
If you are demonstrating savings rather than retirement holdings, ask whether a bank proof of balance document would do instead. It shows a figure without listing a member number or a TFN at all.

Why does my super statement show my TFN?
Your superannuation fund is legally entitled to hold your TFN and uses it for reporting and to match contributions to your account. That is a legitimate use by the fund. It becomes a problem when the statement is forwarded to a broker, landlord or lender who has no entitlement to that number at all.
Can I remove the TFN before sharing?
Yes. The OAIC states that if a document you have been asked to supply includes your tax file number, you are allowed to cross out or remove it before handing the document over. Removing it does not change any figure on the statement.
What should I leave visible for proof of assets?
Your name, the fund name, the statement period and the closing balance. That establishes the asset exists and is yours. The member number, TFN, beneficiaries and insurance detail contribute nothing to that assessment.
Is there a better document than a super statement?
Often. If someone is testing whether you have savings, a bank proof of balance document shows a figure without a member number or TFN anywhere on it. Offer the least revealing document that answers the actual question.
Why do super scams target TFNs?
Because a TFN plus identity documents is enough to attempt a fraudulent consolidation or withdrawal. Common approaches offer to check how much super you have or to lodge a return on your behalf in exchange for your TFN and a photo of your ID. A single statement containing TFN, member number and balance hands over most of that in one file.
